Today, I sat down with my friends Salla and her husband from Finland. She showed me how to make Vietnamese Coffee. We sat at a small roadside cafe and walk through the process of making the coffee. After Salla brewed a few cups, I tried it. She is right, it is simply delicious! Yes, I also agree that it is better than most American coffees. Here’s a quick guide on how to make Vietnamese coffee:

  1. First, you will need to buy a Vietnamese filter. It is a small coffee pot that looks like a hat and sits upon the top of the coffee pot. You can buy one here on Amazon.
  2. Next, you will need some condensed milk and chicory coffee. There are two schools of thought with coffee. Coffee with chicory is the best choice. Here are two types of coffee blends you can use. Cafe DU Monde or French Market. These are typically found in your local grocery store. Chicory is a caffine-free herb whose roots are dried, ground and roasted. It is used to flavor your coffee in Vietnam.
  3. If you buy your own coffee and chicory and mix them, grind them to a fine grind.
  4. Put about 1/3 condensed milk in the bottom of your glass cup.
  5. Open the top of the Vietnamese coffee brewer and place 3 rounded teaspoons of your coffee mix in there.
  6. Place your filter on the top of the coffee cup.
  7. Pour hot water into the device until it is about 1/4 full.
  8. Wait 30 seconds or until all the water flows through.
  9. Unscrew the filter two complete turns.
  10. Now, fill the filter with hot water, place the cover on and wait about 5 minutes.
  11. When the drippings stop and all the water has passed through, carefully remove the device.
  12. Stir the contents in the glass coffee cup and enjoy!
